Dementia Education

Who are we?

Two care home (Dementia) education and training nurses (CHEN’S) are implementing the Dementia Training Pathway across the county for care home staff who wish to be dementia link workers.

What do we do?

The Dementia Training Pathway is a 12-15 month educative and supportive model for learning to facilitate the development of confident care home staff. The pathway is underpinned by the skills for care competency framework which leads to the acquisition of knowledge and skills to the accredited level 2 certificate in dementia care; followed by the graduation and recognised title of Dementia Link Worker (DLW) for staff working in the care home sector. The ultimate aim of the DLW role is to model, share and disseminate best practice dementia care with colleagues in order to drive up the quality of care for people with dementia.

The pathway is complemented by 5 locality based monthly forums (Gloucester, Stroud, Cheltenham, Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean) which last for two and a half hours. The best practice forum (BPF) is facilitated by the CHEN’s and contains learning materials and group exercises which reinforce the knowledge needed to attain the skills for care competencies.  It also implements the recommendations of the N.I.C.E Dementia guidance (2006) and the National Dementia Strategy (2009).
