Clinical governance

Clinical Governance was originally defined as

‘…A framework through which NHS organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care, by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish…’   (A First Class Service – Quality in the new NHS, 1998)

It is the process by which we

    • ensure that quality is at the heart of the care that we provide
    • aim to achieve the highest possible standards of care
    • ensure that we learn from mistakes and wherever possible prevent them from reoccurring
    • help to gain public confidence in our services
    • meet our responsibilities as set by the government

When seen from the service user’s point of view, clinical governance is fundamentally about 2 key themes

    • having confidence that the people providing their care are as competent and skilled as possible
    • being spoken to with respect and empathy
Care Quality Commission - Annual check

The last Care Quality Commission review for 2008/9 found that 2gether NHS Foundation Trust performed very well across all of our assessments, and therefore the trust received an overall score of excellent.
